In today’s rapidly evolving world of immersive entertainment, technology is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in storytelling and audience engagement. At the forefront of this innovation is A3 Visual, a company known for its creative prowess in projection mapping, video mapping, LED walls, and large-scale visual experiences.
We recently sat down with Sean Mason, Chief Creative Officer of A3 Visual’s Immersive Division, to discuss the future of immersive experiences, the growing impact of technology, and how collaborations with companies like Panasonic Connect are shaping the next generation of entertainment.
Q: Can you tell us about the experiences you support and your history of working with Panasonic Connect?
Sean Mason: We collaborate on a variety of events throughout the year, and we often use Panasonic projectors for our installations. One notable collaboration is Let's Glow SF, a light festival we host every December. The event spans 10 days and involves projections on four buildings across the city. Last year, around 67,000 people attended, and we expect even more this year. Panasonic Connect not only donates projectors to the festival but also provides technical support for Let’s Glow, as well as many of our other events.
Q: How have immersive experiences evolved over the past five years, and what role has technology played in this growth?
Sean Mason: Immersive experiences have come a long way. In indoor settings, we're moving beyond basic projection mapping on flat surfaces and seeing more demand for interactive elements and 3D-mapped objects. Exterior projections are also growing in popularity, with larger-scale light festivals becoming a cultural trend across the country. It's exciting to see how projection technology is expanding what we can do in both indoor and outdoor immersive environments.
Q: What’s next for immersive experiences, and how will companies like A3 Visual and Panasonic Connect help shape this future?
Sean Mason: I believe the future lies in more permanent installations, especially outdoors. We’re focusing on technology that can withstand various weather conditions for large-scale, outdoor experiences. Indoors, I expect to see more permanent, ticketed experiences that go beyond traditional projection mapping, diving deeper into 3D environments.
Q: What impact does immersive technology have on storytelling?
Sean Mason: Immersive technology is an incredibly powerful storytelling tool. It allows us to engage audiences on multiple sensory levels, combining visuals, sound, and physical space to create emotional and memorable experiences. If done well, an immersive environment can hold a person’s attention for hours, making it a highly effective way to convey stories.
Q: Lastly, what excites you most about the future of immersive entertainment?
Sean Mason: I’m excited about the blending of different mediums. We're starting to integrate lasers, moving lights, and even drone shows alongside video projections. Traditionally, these elements have been separate, but now we’re combining them into one cohesive immersive experience. The possibilities are endless, and it's an exciting time for the industry.
